Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Overview
My Small Wonders is experiencing an outbreak of RSV this January. The first case was reported on Monday, Jan 12th and the count is up to 15 cases as of Wednesday. This is prime time for RSV in Oklahoma, as you can see on the graph to the right (click to access a larger version).
According to the CDC, illness usually begins 4 to 6 days after exposure with a runny nose and decrease in appetite. Coughing, sneezing, and fever typically develop 1 to 3 days later. Wheezing may also occur. In very young infants, irritability, decreased activity, and breathing difficulties may be the only symptoms of infection. Most otherwise healthy infants infected with RSV do not require hospitalization. In most cases, including among those who need to be hospitalized, full recovery from illness occurs in about 1 to 2 weeks. Infected individuals are usually contagious for 3 to 8 days after symptoms first develop.
Visits to a healthcare provider for an RSV infection are very common. During such visits, the healthcare provider will assess the severity of disease to determine if the patient should be hospitalized. In the most severe cases of disease, infants may require supplemental oxygen, suctioning of mucus from the airways, or intubation (have breathing tubes inserted) with mechanical ventilation.
My Small Wonders takes every precaution possible to limit the number of outbreaks that occur at our center but RSV is extremely contagious and extremely common during this time of year. It doesn’t help that the children must stay inside all day due to the cold weather. We have taken the extra step of installing "high efficiency" air filters that help filter out viral particles that make it into the HVAC system.
Please refer to your parent handbook for procedures to follow if you beleive your child may be infected. Please do not bring your child to school if there is a chance they may be contagious or if your child is considered "high risk" for RSV. If your child is brought to school with symptoms or develops them while at MSW you will be called and then will have one hour to pick up your child. We require your child to be symptom free for 24 hours or a doctor’s note before your child may return.
We appreciate your cooperation as we work to contain this illness. If you have any questions, please call the center at 405-285-7752.
